Today we met Adnan, vocalist of the Dubai-based band Svengali (http://www.svengali.me)

The first time we saw them was back in January when they opened for Sepultura at the Hard Rock Cafe of Dubai and….we just loved their music!

Their last album, “Theory of Mind” is very powerful, both under a music and lyrics perspective.

We look forward to see them on stage again soon and discover their new album!

Are you happy about the success obtained by your album “theory of mind”?

I would have never imagined the reach that ‘Theory of Mind’ got since its release. The support from The Svengali Family was mind-blowing, and we were very happy with the reaction.

I Can’t wait for everyone to hear the new stuff!

How do you usually write the lyrics of your songs?

Usually, the instrumental version of the songs are the bedrock of where the song goes thematically.

If a song makes me feel a certain way or reminds me of something, I build on that and it just kind of happens from there.

Do you remember writing “blindfolds”?

Absolutely! Blindfolds was the first song written for Theory of Mind and set the tone for the rest of the album.

It started with the opening riff pattern and was completely written and demoed within a day, including the vocals.

What inspired the lyrics of “sink or swim?

A friend of the band was going through a rough time and this idea of pushing your way through and swimming on until you reach the shore was fresh in mind.

A concept that I think many of us can relate to.

What is the best verse you ever wrote?

I think our best work is yet to come on our upcoming album, which will be released very soon.

And the one of your favorite song (not written by you)?

It’s a strange one, but Passenger by the Deftones is probably one of my favourite songs.

I’m sure the other guys have completely different picks though.

What is the last song you wrote?

A song off the new album titled “Quicksand” – which you’ll get hear very soon!

What does music mean to you?

Music is everything to me. If I didn’t have that outlet, I’m not sure what else I’d be doing!

What makes you happy in life? And upset?

The people I call Family being happy and healthy, that makes me happy. I don’t get upset to often.

What is the best thing of performing for your audience?

When they sing along. There’s nothing that beats a crowd singing their heart out along with us.

When those songs mean as much to them as they do to us.

What inspired “reflections”?

Reflections was inspired by a reincarnation story a friend told us – where after being reincarnated, they remembered their old life.

It triggered the idea of constant nostalgia and built from there.
