rockyourlyricsToday we are very excited to release the interview that we had with the Italian band Marlene Kuntz (http://www.marlenekuntz.com) that just released their new album titled “Nella Luce”.
It was extremely interesting to talk with them and discover the meaning of some of their songs; a real journey in their twenty-three years of career!
RYL: In agosto avete pubblicato “Nella Luce”, secondo voi, qual e’ la piu grande sfida di questo vostro nono studio album?
Last August you released “Nella Luce”, in your opinion, which is the biggest challenge of this 9th studio album?
Marlene Kuntz: Senza ombra di dubbio la decisione di autoprodurci artisticamente: non l’avevamo mai fatto in maniera così drastica, avvalendoci unicamente di un fidato ingegnere del suono, e per questo motivo a tutti gli effetti la si deve e può definire “la nostra sfida”.
Without any doubts, the choice to produce the album by ourselves; we never did it in this way, we worked only a sound engineer that worked since long time with us .
For this reason we can define it “our challenge”
RYL: Come e’ vostra abitudine l’album e’ corredato da materiale che mostra la sua realizzazione, un’esperienza che di solito e’ per pochi, ma che voi “regalate” ai vostri fan. Ci raccontate di un episodio divertente della sua realizzazione che non e’ stato coperto dalle telecamere?
Like you are used to do, also this album comes with a lot of video- material related to its preparation; usually this experience is privilege for few, while you are gifting it to your fans. Can you please tell us one funny episode that was not covered by the cameras?
Marlene Kuntz: Beh, davvero molti sono gli episodi di questo tipo. Considera che le telecamere non erano perennemente accese, e dunque quando erano spente la vita in studio proseguiva come sempre, fra concentrazione, performance, battute argute, battute idiote, riflessioni, esplosioni. Eccetera.
Well, there are really a lot of episodes of this kind…Just think about that the cameras weren’t really working 24/7, so, when these were off, the “normal life” in studio was like any other day, with a lot of thinking, performance, smart jokes, not-smart jokes etc…
RYL: Il nostro sito internet si occupa di “scoprire” come le lyrics delle canzoni vengono scritte, cercando di capire, dagli stessi artisti, che cosa pensavano mentre componevano la musica/scrivevano i versi; una delle nostre canzoni favorite nel nuovo album e’ “Osja Amore Mio”. Ci potete dire come l’avete scritta?
Our website has as a main object to discover how the lyrics of the songs have been written, going in deep in the mind of the artist while they were writing them.
One of our favorite songs of your new album is “Osja Amore Mio”, can you tell us how you wrote it?
Marlene Kuntz: La vicenda del poeta Osip Mandel’stam mi era già nota: ovvero la pessima fine che gli fece fare Stalin per non essersi allineato all’arte propagandistica voluta dal regime. Fu sufficiente una sua poesia in cui lo prendeva un po’ in giro (niente a che fare con l’ampia e ovvia libertà di cui godono le persone dalle nostre parti nel fare ironia sulle nostre classi politiche), per garantirgli la lunga agonia del confino e del gulag. Nel quale morì di stenti. La spinta definitiva a parlarne l’ho avuto dopo aver letto il memoir della moglie Nadezda, che parla della vicenda. Lei imparò a memoria tutti i versi del marito, per esser certa che li si potesse tramandare alle generazioni future (se la polizia di stato avesse trovato i manoscritti li avrebbe senz’altro distrutti), e questo atto d’amore, inglobato nella intensa storia d’amore che fu la loro vicenda terribile, mi ha convinto a farne una canzone.
I knew already the story of the poet Osip Mandel’stam that died because he refused to “align” with the propaganda of Stalin’s regime. What happen is that he wrote just one poem that was barely teasing the regime and its leader and this was enough to exile him in the gulag (obviously nothing to do with the today’s freedom of talking about political parties) where he died because of the poor conditions of life.
I decided to write a song out of this story when I came to know from the memories of his wife Nadezda that , in order to preserve the memory of the works of the husband, she had to learn by heart all the verses that he wrote.
In fact, the police was destroying all the books, scripts made by Osip… its memory wouldn’t survive without her.
This incredible love story inspired me to write this song.
RYL: Qual e’ il vero significato dietro il testo della canzone “Solistizio”, perche’ dite che e’ irragionevole non essere partecipe?
What is the true meaning of the song “Solistizio”? What is behind verses like “is unreasonable being not active”?
Marlene Kuntz: Simbolicamente e culturalmente nel corso delle epoche antiche il solstizio è assurto a ruolo di giorno dell’anno in cui, con la sua ampia luminosità (il sole è allo zenith), favorire e propiziare le unioni e celebrare la comunanza delle genti (anche la natura manifesta questa attitudine, ad esempio il grano, rigogliosamente intrecciato). E in tale giorno il protagonista della canzone si ritrova dispiaciuto, con la sua introversione problematica e asociale, a rendersi conto di non essere “partecipe” di questa comunione fra le genti e la natura.
The “Solstice” is the day of the year when the sun has the most light.
Since the ancient times this day is considered very special and a celebration of “getting together” in various forms (also the nature is part of this, just imagine the wheat that, in this day, is kind of woven)
In this day, where all the world and nature celebrate, the protagonist of the song is unhappy because, due to his introvert state of mind, he cannot participate .
RYL: Il 2013 e’ il vostro ventitreesimo anno insieme, ritornando al vostro primo album “Catartica” quale ricordo vi ritorna alla mente del giorno che finalmente e’ stato pubblicato?
2013 will be your 23rd year together, going back to your first album “Catartica”, what do you remember of the day finally it has been released?
Marlene Kuntz: Cos’altro ricordare se non la gioia e l’emozione di essere riusciti a fare una cosa che, in quei tempi, aveva ancora un valore del tutto speciale: ovvero fare un disco.
That day there was a lot happiness and joy; the excitement to be able to do something big like release a record that, during those days, was something extremely special
RYL: “Lieve” e’ la nostra canzone favorite insieme a “Canzone di Domani”, se ne rileggiamo i testi, tutte e due hanno in comune il concetto di “ restare in volo”, cosa significava per voi?
“Lieve”, together with “Canzone di Domani” are our favorite songs; if we read their verses both of them have in common the idea of “ being able to continue to fly”. What did that mean for you?
Marlene Kuntz: Un po’ quello che può essere il significato dato ai suoi personaggi sospesi in aria da parte di Marc Chagall: un distacco dalle turbolenze terrene.
For us it had the same meaning of the one you can find in the art of Marc Chagall when he paints people that “float in the air”, he wants to represent a detachment from the issue of everyday life.
RYL: Non possiamo non parlare delle vostre collaborazioni con artisti,musicisti e produttori di fama internazionale e chiaramente di “La Canzone Che io scrivo per te”, cantata con Skin… come e’ nato questo progetto di collaborazione?
We cannot avoid to talk about the collaborations that you do with famous artists, musicians and producers, like you did with Skin in “La Canzone Che Io Scrivo Per Te”, how did you started this project with her?
Marlene Kuntz: Fu un’ottima idea del nostro discografico di allora: ci chiesero se ci andava. Noi ci pensammo un giorno intero e dicemmo sì. Poi è nata un’ottima amicizia fra noi e lei, e un po’ di occasioni attraverso le quali ritrovarci e fare cose insieme.
That was a great idea of the executives of that time that asked us if we wanted to do a song with her; we thought about it one full day and we agreed.
From that moment we became friend and we had several occasions to work together
RYL: E poi, a Sanremo, c’e’ stata Patty Smith con Impressioni di Settembre….con chi avreste voluto collaborare, ma non siete ancora riusciti a farlo?
And then, at Sanremo Music Festival, you sang with Patti Smith the song “Impressioni di Settembre” , who is in your wish list of potential future collaborations?

Well, if I have really to express a desire, I would say Nick Cave.
RYL: Ultima domanda, quando ci regalate una canzone in inglese?
Last question, when you will “gift” to us a song in English?
Marlene Kuntz: Quando imparerò a pensare in Inglese per scrivere in quella lingua, e quando imparerò a interpretare i miei cantati in maniera non goffa.
When I will learn how to think in English, how to write in that language and when I will be able to interpret my songs in the way I want.
