How do you usually write the lyrics of your songs?
My technique changes a lot!
But recently I’ve been trying to come up with a title first and then basing the content of the verses, choruses etc around that.
I’ve got a long list of future song titles written down in the notes on my phone for the next time I’m suffering from writer’s block.
What inspired your new single “Boyfriend”?
It was a bit of a weird situation but it all happened on my way back home from a writing session in Brixton.
I got to Victoria Station and missed my connecting train to Brighton, so I had a lot of time to kill.
Suddenly I had a rare miracle moment where most of the song came to me at once. So I rushed to the Wetherspoons, grabbed a beer and I wrote the lyrics of the song there and then.
So yes, it’s more or less a tongue in cheek song about falling in love with randomers in a train station.
And “Ride Away”?
“Ride Away” is an older song which was written during a pretty gloomy time in my life.
But basically it’s an “Oh god, this relationship is going to shit” song. I was right.
What is the best verse you ever wrote?
My favourite is the second verse of our song “Pretty In The Morning”.
The line “Behold my mission! Dying on my own.
I’ll have no witness, I’m steadier alone” is something I would get tattooed on myself if that wasn’t such a lame and self-satisfied thing to do.
When is last time you wrote lyrics for a song?
Probably yesterday or the day before.
What is your favorite song (not written by you)?
Gosh, this changes on a daily, sometimes hourly basis.
But I’d say the song that I’ve been digging the most today has been “You And Me” by Penny & The Quarters. It’s quite old but it’s probably one of the most delicate and sweetest songs I’ve discovered in a while.
Do you remember the day you wrote “Struggling”?
A little bit. It was at some point last year when I got bored of an essay I was writing for uni so I decided to write that instead.
When you will release your new album/ep?
Well “Boyfriend” is the first taster of that EP! But hopefully the whole package will be out by Spring 2018.
We’re very psyched about it and to finally have a physical collection of work which will be available to fans.
What does music mean for you?
I’ve taken music seriously since about the age of 12 when I first discovered Guitar Hero and wanted to be Slash.
But yeah, as difficult and soul crushing it can be, I can’t stop making it and I don’t think I will be able to until I drop!
When you bought your first record? Where was it?
The first record I bought was pretty lame.
I think I was about 8 or 9 years old, back when I used to live in America but it was either an album by Aaron Carter or NSYNC. LOL.
