RYL: Tell us more about “INNOVA,” your upcoming album…. how is the funding project with pledgemusic.com going?
Dawn: It has gone incredibly! INNOVA is definitely our most diverse record to date. We spent a lot of time writing it with the intent to stretch ourselves both lyrically and musically.
We worked with some amazing producers and feel so fortunate that our Pledge campaign has been such a success. Our project was able to get fully funded, giving this album the support it needed to reach its full potential.
Now Pledgemusic.com/projects/Fireflight also serves as our fans online source for pre-ordering the new album and the numbers are climbing as we release the first singles.
RYL: Why, in your opinion, is “Unbreakable” the favorite song of your fans on iTunes? What does this song mean to you?
Dawn: I think “Unbreakable” has become a fan favorite firstly because of the amount of exposure it has received, having been used on NBC’s prime time advertisements, and then secondly and more importantly because it has a message that really empowers and encourages hope and strength in our listeners.
For me, Unbreakable has become a soundtrack to our band’s influence in the lives of our fans.
RYL: Is there a common meaning/theme between all the songs on the new album?
Dawn: INNOVA is a very eclectic album, the topic and feel of each different song span a vast range of emotions and sounds.
However, overall the theme is embracing God’s power and love in all parts of life and how that carries over into how we treat and interact with others.
RYL: Do you remember how the lyrics of “Resuscitate” were written?
Dawn: We wrote “Resuscitate” with a brilliant producer team made up of Kip Williams and Josh Silverberg. Josh has this amazing basement studio where we would work and we would sit for hours fleshing out track rhythms and sounds, while we discussed the meaning of life and put it all down in lyric and melody.
RYL: How do you usually write the lyrics and music of your songs?
Dawn: Usually, I like to have at least a basic track to start with – I find it inspiring. A lot of times the melody flows naturally from that point and the lyrics evolve from whatever concept is on my heart at the time.
RYL: Tell us everything about your new single “We Are Alive”….
Dawn: “We Are Alive” is a song that celebrates the energy and power of every moment we are given here on earth.
A lot of times we get so distracted that we totally ignore the beauty and love that we can share with each other, and by doing so, we miss out on the power of each second.
RYL: Which is the most important thing for you while doing music?
Dawn: Communication. If people can’t relate, then they won’t be impacted by what you have to say. Finding a way to express your heart clearly in a way that other people can see their own struggles and joys in is the key to connecting with others through music.
RYL: Which is the best verse you ever wrote?
Dawn: That’s hard to say, whichever words I have written that have meant something to someone else are the best words I have written.
RYL: Which is the last song you wrote (not published yet)?
Dawn: I wrote a song with our producer friend Geoff Duncan not too long ago.
He’s also a producer on this upcoming album. It’s been such an amazing experience creating INNOVA, I feel as if I don’t want the process to ever stop.
RYL: Tell us about your touring this summer…
Dawn: We are looking forward to getting back on the road! We are still booking in festivals and shows and can’t wait to get back with our fans out on the road.
