How do you usually write the lyrics of your songs?
I let the words float into my head, I keep em written somewhere… and then when I hear a beat it may jump out and I go from there.
In your opinion, what is the most important thing in songwriting?
The truth. Your truth and making it sound “sexy” or in line with your brand.
Are you ever scared of revealing aspects of your personal life/experience to strangers through your music?
My music is based on my life, past or future. Depends on what day you catch me at… so no. It’s partly what takes so long sometimes an experience or lesson takes longer than I expected, but then I have something substantial to write or sing about so. It works out well.
What is the best lyric that you ever wrote (the most meaningful for you)?
“I went to Africa and came back darker, knowing myself and feeing my roots a Lil bit harder” – 1980 – The 18th Day
My first album – I was 23 when I wrote that, as a rapper first it’s always important to me to represent my culture even when no one cared or danced to it or even recognized it as something or value. My parents and family did a great job of instilling who I am and what I stand for at a young age.
How did your music evolved in the last years?
In the past few years it’s gotten clearer and I think adapted with the thought of today while staying true to what I know and am still learning. Musically the core stayed real bass and drums driven. Melodies evolved while still being inspired by the past.
What inspired “Better”, part of your latest album “Lover’s Rock” to be released in September ?
It was the last record and upon hearing the first few bars I felt enveloped by it, exactly how I feel like my parents were when they met – as they described it being “just them in the room”, completely overtaken.
What was the best moment of your career? And the most difficult one?
The best moments keep topping themselves, I’m grateful, the difficult ones never go away complete I just figure new ways to deal with them…
What are your plans for 2018?
Release the new album, tour, act, continue to develop my artists Nick & Navi…
