How do you usually write the lyrics of your songs?
90% of the time we write lyrics last.
Our process typically begins with making noise before we know what we’re going to speak about lyrically. We’re genuinely inspired by sounds.
Most of the time we’ll begin making a track and at some point along the way a lyrical concept will pop up. Then we’ll go back and “fit the puzzle” lyrically.
We don’t necessarily believe this is the best way to write a song, but we enjoy drawing lyrical inspiration based on how the track makes us feel.
Do you remember writing “heaven”?
For sure! “Heaven’s” been around for a while now.
The song started with me (Adam) sitting at a piano messing around with some chords, then out of nowhere Jordan sang the chorus hook; lyrics, melody, ready to go as if it just fell out of the sky (We wish songwriting was always that easy!)
We both stopped and looked at each other like, “where did that just come from?!” We immediately got to work building the track based around the Chorus.
We came back the next day to finish up the lyrics in the verse, which to this day we feel are some of the most sincere lyrics we’ve ever written.
What inspired the lyrics of “one in a million”?
We had just gone on a vacation with our wives and couple other friends to the San Francisco area.
It’s funny, we’re finding more and more that traveling really inspires us and energizes us to write music.
For whatever reason, this trip inspired us to come home and write a love song. We don’t write a lot of love songs, haha…. I guess we were wooed by the California coast.
What is the best verse you ever wrote?
Oh geez… this is like being asked “which one’s your favorite child?”.
If we HAD to pick favorites I guess we would put the verses of “Heaven” up towards the top.
And the one of your favorite song (not written by you)?
Ok, this is an impossible question to answer, haha?!
There’s been SO MUCH good pop music in the past 70 years! Not sure what a single favorite song would be, but the Paul McCartney catalog would be a good place to start.
What is the last song you wrote?
A song called “Pursuit of Happiness.” Hopefully everyone will get to hear it soon.
What does music mean to you?
Let’s put it this way, it’s nearly impossible for us to imagine life without music. Music feels like home.
We can be anywhere, and if there’s a guitar, piano, or just music being played, the world starts to feel a little more comfortable. It just has a way of soothing the soul.
What makes you happy in life?
Lots of things make us happy in life. Our marriages, our friends, traveling, food, drinks, our dogs…
Lord knows in our line of work we’ve had some seriously low lows, sleeping on floors, barely being able to afford rent, eating a can of black beans for dinner because we couldn’t afford groceries.
Through the years we’ve learned a lot about being joyful and happy.
If we were to always let our circumstances dictate our happiness, we would have been some of the most depressing, angry, and boring people for the past decade! We try to live life finding joy and happiness amidst our circumstances.
What is the best thing of performing for your audience?
Hands down the best part about performing is the human connection.
It’s a pretty special thing to see a bunch of strangers come together in a room to share in an experience with us and these songs.
We consider it an honor to be the vehicle that brings people together. It’s why we’re motivated to create music in the first place.
What inspired “what are you waiting for”?
“What are you waiting for” was a song that reflects our own inward feelings towards ourselves as much as it is about people in our lives that we love and want to see prosper.
It’s a song about losing yourself somewhere along the way, losing sight of your goals and letting life pass you by.
It’s really a terrible feeling, and I think the song was probably subconsciously birthed out of frustration. It was a reminder to stay the course.
When you will release a new ep/album?
We will be releasing a new EP in the first quarter of 2018!
