How do you usually write the lyrics of your songs?
While falling asleep or daily stream of consciousness scribbling in my notebook.
In your opinion, what is the most important thing in songwriting?
Finding something, whether it’s the lyrics or a musical component, that makes the listener feel something new.
Are you ever scared of revealing aspects of your personal life/experience to strangers through your music?
I’m a fairly private person, however, it’s difficult for me to escape personal topics in my writing. Perhaps it’s the easier way for me to express certain ideas and experiences. In a day and age when people reveal soooo much about themselves in a public format, I’m not too too worried about it for myself.
What is the best lyric that you ever wrote (the most meaningful for you)?
He came from out west / He was a sad sad boy / but his feelings were hard to find / It’s funny how the time will fog up all the trouble / He ran away from his mother / and bla bla bla bla bla bla
What inspired “Neon Me Out”, part of your latest album “Sego Sucks”?
I checked my social media one day.
And “High Tide”?
Initially, I wanted to try writing a verse out of one continuous sentence. It naturally set the tone and theme for the rest of the song.
Do you remember the day you wrote “Shame”?
Came in two phases. Wrote the instrumentation, then went and finished the song. I was sick as a dog when we recorded the scratch vocals and ended up forgetting to retrack them.
Is there a link/a common theme among the songs of the new album?
It’s prob ok not to have an opinion about everything. It’s prob fine to have people dislike you.
What is the best suggestion your producer gave you?
He told me in the studio over the talkback mic, “HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!! THAT HAS TO BE..THE MOST. GENERIC. LINE. I’VE EVER HEARD IN MY LIIIIIIFE!!!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!! What else do you got?”
What are your plans for 2019?
After releasing the record April 5, we’ll be touring all over. I’ll probably try to sneak in a trip to Lake Powell somewhere in there.
