Your new album “Shine A Light” has just  been released,  is there a link between all the lyrics of the songs?

This last year has been an observation into myself and the world as a whole. I feel like I’ve taken a flashlight and shined into the dark places that I was previously too afraid to look at, and stared them in the face. These songs are a culmination of my discoveries and observations.
How do you usually write the lyrics of your songs?

Usually they are brewing for a while as I’m thinking about certain concepts in my life, and then they just come out in one go. (and then of course they are edited, and edited from there)
What is the best verse you ever wrote?
How do we find the words to speak here,
know you have all that you need,
it can hard to quell this anger
inequity runs so deep
claiming the air asserting your power
I won’t allow you to make me feel small
I will stay strong, us this pain to inspire
but I need your help, do you hear my call

What was the soundtrack to your childhood?

Destiny’s Child…

What was the first record you ever bought?
En Vogue!

What inspired “I Can’t Tell” ?

My partner Steve Watkins! He is my dearest love. This song is about how you can be so connected to someone whether they are there with you in person or not.

Do you remember the day you wrote “Be Somebody”?

Yes! I wrote this song with my dear friend Catherine Feeny! We were at the coast together when she was doing a songwriting workshop and she was doing a song a day challenge for a month with a group of friends. We wrote this song in a little bit over an hour, and it came from a headline in a newspaper “Beauty Queen Loses her Crown”.. This song ended up becoming about the mob mentality that our society has.

Are you ever scared of revealing, aspects of your  personal experience, to strangers through your music?

Music is incredibly vulnerable. I always tell myself the more uncomfortable/vulnerable I am to write it, the better/more moving it probably is.. So yes! It can definitely be hard at times, but I think sharing myself fully can help others feel less alone in their own experience, which is a definite goal of mine!

What inspired “Ever Moving”?

The loss of a woman who was like a mom to me, and also the inconsistency of being a musician and having a partner who is also one as well. Just having to face the fact that I have been holding onto expectations instead of seeing things as they really are.

What is the best show you ever played?

This is a hard one.. but one of my favorite shows I’ve ever played was in a cave in Tennessee called the Cumberland Caverns. A cave!!! It was amazing.

What are your plans for 2018?

A bunch of festivals this summer, and then a Europe tour this fall! Plus hopefully some more music videos, and more writing as well! Also.. maybe a vacation of some sort.. haha!
