C’e’ qualcosa che lega queste canzoni…un tema in comune?
Ciao! Let’s start from the amazing great news of the new album “Tracce Clandestine” that will be released the 24th of march. Among the new songs, a lot of new live tracks never published before….
Is there something that ties all these songs? A common theme?
MODENA CITY RAMBLERS: Sono canzoni che, per un motivo o l’altro, abbiamo “lasciato” per strada in questi venti e passa anni di carriera.
Canzoni più volte eseguite dal vivo o incise per progetti particolari esterni alla nostra discografia ufficiale, nella maggior parte dei casi “omaggi” a quegli artisti da sempre punto di riferimento e fonte di ispirazione per i MCR.
Nasciamo ad inizio anni 90 come gruppo fortemente ispirato dal movimento punk folk o rock folk irlandese (Pogues, Waterboys…) e i concerti degli esordi erano basati su cover di questi artisti.
È un disco che ci riavvicina alle nostre origini, al piacere di suonare e, in alcuni casi, stravolgere canzoni che ci hanno portato ad essere quello che siamo ora.
These are songs that, for a reason or another, we “left” on the way during more than 20 years of career.
Some of them are part of specific projects, some of them are just a tribute to the artists that inspired us and our music.
When we started, at the beginning of the nineties, we toke inspiration from the Irish Punk Folk and Rock Folk music (Pogues, Waterboys,…)… our concerts, at the beginning, were based on cover of these artists.
We love to play music and this new album is also a tribute to that, to our origins, to the songs that brought us here.
RYL: qual e’ stata l’ultima canzone che avete scritto?
Which is the last song you wrote?
MODENA CITY RAMBLERS: “The trumpets of Jericho” scritta, arrangiata e incisa lo scorso febbraio insieme a Terry Woods dei Pogues in Irlanda, unico vero brano inedito presente in questo nuovo disco.
“The Trumpets of Jericho” recorded last january in Ireland with Terry Woods of Pogues. This song is the true news of the entire album, it was never released before.
RYL: Nel nuovo album troveremo delle speciali collaborazioni ?
In the new album, are you collaborating with different artists?
MODENA CITY RAMBLERS: Si, un altro motivo di soddisfazione legato a questo nostro nuovo disco è stato quello di aver collaborato con artisti che sentiamo, ora più che mai, vicini al nostro mondo musicale.
Da Terry Woods dei Pogues con il quale abbiamo inciso in Irlanda tre brani (la già citata “The trumpets of Jericho”, “Canzone per un amico fragile” e “Crookedwood polkas”) agli amici spagnoli de la Pegatina (“Clandestino” di Manu Chao) e Bongo Botrako (“Chan chan”).
Poi Eugenio Finardi con il quale abbiamo duettato su “Saluteremo il signor padrone” e Alberto Bertoli (figlio dell’indimenticato Pierangelo in “Prega Crest”, canzone in dialetto emiliano scritta da suo padre).
E ancora i bosniaci Dubioza Kolektiv in “Sidi h’bibi” e Stefane Mellino, fondatore dei Negresses Vertes, gruppo francese al quale i MCR si sono fortemente ispirati.
Con lui abbiamo arrangiato e registrato ” L’homme des marais” degli stessi Negresses e “Rock the Casbah” dei Clash.
Yes, but only the ones very close to our music: Terry Woods of Pogues for the songs “The trumpets of Jericho”, “Canzone per un amico fragile” and “Crookedwood polkas” …our spanish friends Pegatina (“Clandestino” by Manu Chao) and Bongo Botrako (“Chan chan”).

We also worked with Dubioza Kolektiv on “Sidi h’bibi” and Stefane Mellino, founder of Negresses Vertes, french group that was source of inspiration for us.
With him we also recorded the Negresses’s song “L’homme des marais” and “Rock the Casbah” by the legendary Clash
RYL: Di solito, come scrivete i versi delle vostre canzoni?
How do you, usually, write the lyrics of your songs?
MODENA CITY RAMBLERS: Non esiste una regola precisa, una canzone può nascere da una suggestione, un’esperienza diretta o indiretta di uno di noi o di tutta la band.
Un viaggio, un libro, un film, una storia ascoltata. Tutto può diventare una canzone. E tutto viene poi filtrato, assemblato, musicato e scritto grazie ad un lavoro collettivo che, già da alcuni anni, fa si che le canzoni siano firmate da tutti i componenti del gruppo.
There is no specific rule, a song can start from one experience (direct or indirect), a trip, a book, a movie, a story we just heard.
Al this can become a song…..everybody is working on it, all our songs are “signed” by all the members of the band
RYL: qual e’ il migliore verso che avrete scritto ( o quello che avete piu’ caro) ?
Which is the best verse you ever written?
MODENA CITY RAMBLERS: Questa è una domanda a cui è davvero impossibile rispondere. Potremmo indicarne uno, ma nel momento stesso in cui dicessimo “ecco, è questo” avremmo già cambiato idea! Diciamo allora che il migliore è quello che dobbiamo ancora scrivere.
It is really impossible to answer to this question, we could tell you that we found one, but, after a while, we would have changed our mind already.
The real answer is…the best verse is the one we will write next.
RYL: secondo Itunes, la canzone favorita dai vostri fans e’ “Cento Passi”, cosa rappresenta questa canzone per voi?
According to ITunes, the favourite song by your fans is “Cento Passi”, what this song means for you?
MODENA CITY RAMBLERS: È sicuramente una delle nostre canzoni più conosciute, ma è anche una canzone a noi molto cara per tutto ciò che rappresenta, non solo per la storia che racconta. Abbiamo avuto la fortuna e l’onore di conoscere personalmente Felicia, la mamma di Peppino Impastato, una donna davvero eccezionale, suo fratello Giovanni, l’amico di mille battaglie Salvo… Personaggi di una vicenda divenuta simbolo di una nuova mentalità legata alla legalità e al “si può fare”. Inutile dire che anche durante i concerti il momento in cui eseguiamo “Cento Passi” è sicuramente uno dei più emozionanti.
Cento Passi is one of the most famous songs but also something very dear to us.
Every time we play it in a concert is a great emotion, it means a lot for us… we also had the honour to meet Felicia, the mom of Peppino Impastato, his brother Giovanni and his best friend Salvo.
They are all protagonists of a wonderful story based on courage, pride and on the fact that “you can do it”
RYL: Parlateci del vostro tour…italia e Europa…..
Tell us about your upcoming tour…Italy? Europe?
MODENA CITY RAMBLERS: Il tour è appena partito, ma già si preannuncia intenso. Toccheremo un po tutte le zone d’Italia fino alla fine di ottobre. Poi speriamo di riuscire a fare alcune belle date in giro per l’Europa. I presupposti, visto anche il tipo di disco, sono molto buoni.
Our tour just started, it will be very intense… we will be almost everywhere in italy until the end of October.
After that, we hope to be able to tour Europe…..we believe our last album is made for a larger public
RYL: Vi diamo un euro da spendere in musica, quale canzone comprereste?

RYL: Tornando indietro col tempo, vi ricordate quando vi siete incontrati la prima volta? Dove e’ stato? In quale circostanza?
Going back with the time, do you remember when you first met?
MODENA CITY RAMBLERS: Posso raccontare quando io (Dudu, cantante del gruppo dal 2006) ho incontrato i MCR. Era il 1992 e un amico mi portò ad ascoltare un gruppo dove cantava suo cugino (Alberto Morselli, primo cantante dei Modena, anche lui di Sassuolo come me) da allora e per alcuni anni non mi sono perso nessun loro concerto e mi sono innamorato di quel modo così genuino e vero di vivere la musica.
I can tell you when I (Dudu, singer of the band from 2006) met the band.
It was 1992, a friend brought me to listen a group where his cousin was singing (Alberto Morselli, first singer of the band, from Sassuolo- like me).
From that moment i began a big fan of the band, i followed them everywhere and, especially, I loved the way they were doing music
