How do you usually write the lyrics of your songs?
I scribble in a notebook from a stream of consciousness and start with whatever comes to mind…I also like to look back at old notes and songs and see if I can build on ideas that didn’t get to make it through.
In your opinion, what is the most important thing in songwriting?
The most important thing to me is honesty. Telling a story from a true feeling or experience is important because when you do that other people can relate.
Are you ever scared of revealing aspects of your personal life/experience to strangers through your music?
I try not to ever come from a place of fear but sometimes I feel more anxious to put it out because of the people who do know me. They might think I’m writing about them and our relationship.
What is the best lyric that you ever wrote (the most meaningful for you)?
‘Falling falling leaves, down down on me, when I learn to love again, I’ll fall in love in love with me.’
What inspired “Try,” your latest song?
“Try” was inspired by a real experience. I saw a shaman in the East Village of Manhattan and we did an inner child retrieval. I was just reflecting on my healing process at the time because that’s what I was going through. I didn’t realize that’s what I was writing about until we were done.
Do you remember the day you wrote “Painkiller”?
Yes, it was much darker compared to the other songs so that seemed to come out of nowhere. But, at the time, I was piecing together a story of my healing process. It’s funny because I wrote that song last. So I told the story backwards from a better perspective.
Are you working on a new album?
Not yet… I am slowly putting out my singles from my current album with large video concepts and I’m having so much fun doing that. I’m in a great place as an artist I can do whatever I want.
What is the best suggestion your producer gave you?
To get out of my own way!
What are your plans for the upcoming months?
I am releasing a new single and video for “Falling Leaves” in October and it’s perfect timing for the fall, so I’m super happy about that. I also have a show coming up in November in LA so stay on the lookout for that one!
