How do you usually write the lyrics of your songs?
Usually, our songs start with melodies over beats at home. Once we have something to hum, we brainstorm concepts that feel familiar but fresh to us, then we start jotting everything down.

In your opinion, what is the most important thing in songwriting?
For us it is originality, the songs you never forget are the ones you’ve never heard before.

Are you ever scared of revealing aspects of your personal life/experience to strangers through your music?
I feel like honesty has become our favourite writing tool. Instead of covering up lyrics with alternate meanings, we prefer writing an exact moment down, or an exact feeling into a song. Sometimes the innocence of simple things you’d say to your friends is just as elaborate to us as poetry.

What is the best lyric that you ever wrote (the most meaningful for you)?
I don’t know, that’s tough, we are constantly trying to top ourselves so it’s difficult to pick an exact one cause we might write something better tomorrow and would have to email u corrected lyrics haha.

What inspired the song “u can still come over,” your latest single?
Nostalgia was our biggest inspiration on this song. We wrote ‘u can still come over’ to be some sort of, odd love letter to past relationships and past experiences that are important to us even though they are over.

And “affection”?
affection’ was written last fall, Brandon and i were both in weird relationship scenarios that felt satisfying in the moment but were very unfulfilling overall. ‘affection’ is about falling into what seems to be an infinite loop of love and lust.

Do you remember the day you wrote “iloveu”?
Oh absolutely, “iloveyou” was the first song we ever created for this new project. it feels like forever ago, but we made the song and knew it was the start of something new for us. we then began creating a sound for ourselves at our home studio, piling songs into playlist folders on my computer. that’s kind of how this project was made.

What is the best suggestion a producer has given you?
Don’t try to make someone else’s song, don’t try to be another artist. It’s okay to be inspired, but always be yourself.

What are your plans for 2019?
New music every month with new visuals to accompany the noise. Lots of new. Can’t wait for everyone to hear and see. Sensory overloads.

To conclude the interview a short Q/A session, please answer the first thing that comes to your mind:

  • Define in one word your playlist “u can still come over”: Cute!!
  • The best show you ever played: El Rey Theatre – Los Angeles, California.
  • The one thing that you must have backstage: Laptop, always making new tunes. And SNAXXX.
  • The soundtrack of your childhood: Rumours – Fleetwood Mac.
  • Your favorite song lyrically speaking, but not written by you: It’s super hard to pick a fav of all time but at the moment we really love James Blake’s new record lyrically.. it’s honest and sweet and filled with a rollercoaster of love and sadness and we dig.
