Vanessa Carlton releases the music video for her new track “Break To Save” off the deluxe version of her latest studio album Love Is An Art produced by Dave Fridmann (MGMT, Flaming Lips). Carlton recently released the deluxe album on the one year anniversary of its’ original release, which also features two demo tracks in addition to the new song – link to deluxe album.

Tying into the release of the new track, Vanessa and Vice’s Documentary Series The Story of take viewers back to where it all began in the new episode of The Story of “A Thousand Miles.” Nearly twenty years after “A Thousand Miles” burst onto the scene, VICE sat down with Vanessa Carlton to dive into the story behind “A Thousand Miles” and its iconic lasting effect on pop culture, including interviews with song producer Ron Fair, music video director Marc Klasfeld and Terry Crews who popularized the song in hit comedy White Chicks.

In each episode of VICE’s documentary series, “The Story of…” the series explores the history, production, and lasting cultural impact of an iconic music track as told by those who created it. By utilizing artist interviews, archival footage, and dissecting the original recording’s multitrack music stems, Vice use the song as a lens through which to tell a deeper story about art, the creative process, innovation, perseverance, the pitfalls of fame/success, and music’s powerful ability to transcend its own boundaries to become more than just a song.

Carlton has constantly challenged both herself and the expectations that surround her throughout her lengthy, accomplished career: she attended both the School of American Ballet and Columbia University, and was discovered as a singer-songwriter/pianist when a cassette tape demo was given to legendary music impresario Ahmet Ertegun. Almost twenty years ago Carlton released her debut single “A Thousand Miles,” which soared to the top of the Billboard charts and garnered multiple Grammy nominations.  Followed up by the coming of age story “White Houses,” these songs opened the door to a career that is ever evolving and reveals an artist that refuses to be placed in a box. From collaborations with Stevie Nicks, Steve Osborne (U2, Doves, B-52’s), Patrick Hallahan (My Morning Jacket), T. Hardy Morris, Deer Tick and beyond, she is constantly pushing herself out of her comfort zone to create memorable works of art. In the summer of 2019, she pushed that even further, making her Broadway debut as Carole King in Beautiful
